UP THE BRITISH (Reviews from Good reads)

Sarah rated it really liked it

This book carefully dissects the historical basis of the way that the british mythologize themselves, how they have dreams about how they 'civilized'' the world and how everybody really respects them - rather like treating a very old, mad relative who thinks they are in charge. Factual and funny. A great read.

This is a really good and interesting read that also made me laugh out loud funny in places. It is a really clear introduction to the issues surrounding national identity and post colonialism. It is fantastic place to start if you are new to the topic as it is also well referenced and easy to find further reading. I particularly enjoyed the Shakespeare chapter - it made me feel much less guilty for not having slavishly read my way through it! all. It brings up lots of issues that are really important thinking about Britain after Thatcher!
